LNG terminal would justify itself in terms of security, not economy - Kobolev

Naftogaz of Ukraine CEO Andriy Kobolyev has said that if Turkey allowed passage through the Bosphorus, the LNG terminal for the receipt and re-gasification of liquefied gas would justify itself in terms of security, rather than economy.

Kobolev said this in an interview with the RBC-Ukraine online news site.

According to him, there is an opportunity to increase LNG supplies from Poland.

"There is an opportunity. To build an additional interconnector is nonsense. It is actively promoted, first and foremost, by those who want to make money on its construction. You cannot agree to it in any way," he said.

Kobolyev noted that in order to build a terminal in Odesa region, it is necessary that a tanker could enter there.

"Turkey does not let LNG tankers pass at the moment. As far as I know, their position has not changed, and it is unlikely to change any time soon. If they allowed passage through the Bosphorus, I think the LNG terminal would justify itself in terms of security, but not in terms of economy. A large amount of LNG gas is available in Europe," he added.
