U.S. Senate boosts assistance package to Ukraine and allies to almost $45B
“The bill includes $44.9 billion in emergency assistance to Ukraine and our NATO allies,” reads the statement released on the Committee’s website.
The size of the new US response package to the Russian invasion of Ukraine exceeds the request of the Biden administration submitted in November — at that time it amounted to a little more than $37 billion.
The White House welcomed this move by lawmakers, emphasizing the importance of the government being able to respond to challenges, including the situation in Ukraine.
As reported, the omnibus appropriations bill together with the assistance package to Ukraine and its allies will be considered by the House of Representatives and the Senate this week. If lawmakers do not pass these bills by December 23, they will be considered during the next session of Congress, when the House of Representatives will be controlled by the Republican Party.
