European Commission transfers EUR 66M to Ukraine for reconstruction of destroyed schools
According to Ukrinform, Katarina Mathernova, Deputy Director-General of the European Commission's Directorate for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, who also serves as acting head of the Support Group for Ukraine in the European Commission, said this on Twitter.
"European Commission has disbursed €66 million to Ukraine's budget for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of schooling facilities that have been damaged in the course of the Russian brutal war against Ukraine," she wrote.
The European Union and Ukraine last week signed an agreement on a EUR 100 million support package for the reconstruction of war-damaged schools.
The assistance package includes EUR 34 million in humanitarian aid, out of which EUR 20 million channeled through the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and EUR 14 million through the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). This support will focus on light and medium repairs including repairs of windows, roofs, doors, sanitation and heating facilities, as well as providing classroom equipment in learning spaces and bomb shelters.
EUR 66 million is to be provided directly to the Ukrainian government as budget support.
