Ukraine calls on IAEA to impose sanctions on Rosatom – PM Shmyhal
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said this at a joint briefing with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi in Kyiv, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
"I also called on Director General Grossi to convey a message to members of the IAEA, with whom he will hold a dialogue, that Ukraine is firmly convinced of the necessity and timeliness of imposing sanctions on Rosatom, limiting the rights and privileges of Russia within the IAEA, and terminating cooperation with the Russian Federation in the nuclear sphere,” Shmyhal said.
According to him, every year Rosatom earns approximately $9 billion from the sale of raw uranium, its enrichment services and the construction of nuclear power plants. In general, the portfolio of companies is estimated at $200 billion.
"I am sure that most of these funds, if received, will go to finance the war, finance missiles that kill peaceful Ukrainians and expose the entire civilized world to nuclear danger. Therefore, we continue to insist on limiting Russia's rights and privileges within the IAEA and terminating cooperation with Russia in the nuclear sphere. Therefore, we call on members of the IAEA and our other partners to support this initiative," the Ukrainian Prime Minister said.
As reported by Ukrinform, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi is in Ukraine on an official visit this week in order to ensure a continuous presence of nuclear safety and security experts at the country’s nuclear power facilities.
