The European Union is mulling financial support for the implementation of two hydrogen valleys in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia and Odesa regions.

That’s according to the Ukrainian Hydrogen Council, Ukrinform reports.

“The first two transborder Hydrogen Valleys in Ukraine will likely receive financial support for green hydrogen production research in Zakarpattia and Odesa regions. The valleys have the potential to install a 2.5 GW electrolyzer capacity and annually produce 220,000 tonnes of hydrogen,” the report reads.

Hydrogen is set to be shipped through gas pipelines in line with plans for the development of European hydrogen infrastructure. The projects will be implemented in stages, with possible production starting in 2027, the UHC public association notes.

“Receiving financial support from the European Union will help Ukraine accelerate its transition to renewable energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, which in turn will contribute to the country's economic recovery. This will also strengthen energy security and stability of Europe,” reads the report.

As reported, on April 4, Ukraine and Germany signed off a statement on the expansion of energy partnership for the "green" restoration and reconstruction of the Ukrainian energy industry.

The parties agreed to boost partnership in areas such as promoting the sustainable development of the energy sector and expanding the use of renewables, including wind, solar, biomass, hydropower, and "green" hydrogen.
