Canada, Poland advocate using frozen Russian assets to pay for rebuilding of Ukraine

This is noted in the statement released by the Office of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Canada Chrystia Freeland following her meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence of Poland, Mariusz Błaszczak.

“The Deputy Prime Ministers discussed how to continue holding Russia accountable for its illegal and barbaric invasion, including through further sanctions and using frozen Russian assets to pay for the rebuilding of Ukraine,” reads the statement.

As noted, Deputy Prime Minister Freeland thanked Deputy Prime Minister Błaszczak for Poland’s leadership and significant military, financial, and humanitarian support for Ukraine.

“The two reiterated their steadfast commitment to continue supporting the people of Ukraine until they are victorious,” the statement says.

As of the end of 2022, about $330 million of Russian assets were frozen in Canada.
