Ukraine loses 6.5 km³ of water due to Kakhovka HPP's explosion
According to Ukrinform, Ukraine's Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources reported this on Telegram.
"This is the biggest environmental disaster since Chornobyl. Every second, about 40,000 cubic meters of water flows out of the Kakhovka reservoir. Ukraine has already lost 6.5 cubic kilometers. We are in talks with the OSCE and UNEP about the work of their experts. We need a clear understanding of how this act of "desperation" by Russians will change the environment and how we can restore nature where possible," Ruslan Strilets, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, said.
It is noted that representatives of the State Agency of Water Resources of Ukraine and the State Environmental Inspectorate are involved in monitoring the environment in the affected areas 24/7. Environmental inspectors continue to work on recording and calculating environmental damage under Russia’s fire.
"So far, the concentration of oil products in the water has exceeded several times, but the downward trend continues," the Ministry of Environment added.
As reported, the water level in the Kakhovka Reservoir has dropped by another meter over the past day and continues to decline. As of 08:00 on June 9, the level of the Kakhovka reservoir near Nikopol is 11.74 meters.
