Ukraine negotiating road ‘green corridor’ for agricultural exports with Moldova, Romania

As the press service of the Ministry of Restoration reports, this became the key topic of the negotiations with the participation of Deputy Minister of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine Serhiy Derkach, State Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development of the Republic of Moldova Mircea Păscăluță and State Secretary of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania Ionel Scrioșteanu.

"The proposal to introduce a ‘green corridor’ includes a series of measures for all three countries. First of all, it is about joint control between Ukraine and Moldova and coordinated control between Moldova and Romania. Thanks to this decision, we will be able to reduce the number of stops for trucks and, accordingly, speed up control. Globally, this decision will allow solving the issue of complex development of infrastructure on the Ukraine–Moldova–Romania border," Derkach emphasized.

These border crossing points are located next to each other and are strategic for goods moving by vehicles to ports, particularly Galați, Romania.

"To create a ‘green corridor’, in addition to the introduction of joint control, a number of decisions are needed, in particular, the development of the Reni border crossing point. In this case, representatives of the controlling authorities of Moldova will be able to carry out all the necessary procedures on exit from Ukraine," the Ministry of Restoration noted.

In addition, the Ministry added, the plan for launching the "green corridor" includes reconstruction of the Reni–Galați road and its expansion from two to four lanes; additional technical equipment for border crossing points. All these measures are possible if the decisions are supported by all three parties.

As reported, the Reni–Giurgiuleşti border crossing point allows about 50 trucks to pass through per day. Instead, it is one of the key road crossing points leading to Romanian ports. The key objective of the development of the infrastructure of this point and the "green corridor" is to increase the actual throughput capacity at least fivefold.
