Mykolaiv farmers export 70% of niche crops produced by them, such as flax, coriander, mustard and millet, towards EU and neighboring countries.

The relevant statement was made by Director of Southern Agrarian-Export Company (PAEK), Regional Council Member Yurii Kormyshkin in a commentary to Ukrinform.

“We are growing niche crops, such as flax, coriander, mustard and millet. 11% of the land bank (more than 5,000 hectares) was allocated for them. 70% of the harvest produced is exported towards Moldova, Poland, Bulgaria, Belgium, Italy, and other countries. We are planning to expand exports towards Asian countries,” Kormyshkin told.

In his words, the above crops were introduced into the sowing structure mainly because they serve as a great precursor in crop rotation and have a quick ripening period. Additionally, unlike wheat which is now unprofitable for agricultural producers in the Mykolaiv region, niche crops have a higher selling price. Another reason is also climate change.

According to Kormyshkin, the sales market for niche crops is not regulated and stable enough today. Some products can be sold on Ukraine’s domestic market. But, two thirds of the harvest produced has to be exported.

In this regard, last year the company developed a whole system of preparations for the sale of high-quality agricultural products. In particular, after-cleaning equipment was purchased; separate storage warehouses were created in grain elevators; laboratories were certified to conduct tests.

Product quality control procedures are carried out at all stages, from sowing to harvest operations, Kormyshkin emphasized.
