After the de-occupation of the territory where the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant (HPP) is located, the facility can be rebuilt in 6-7 years.

This was announced by Ihor Syrota, CEO of Ukrhydroenergo, Ukrinform reports citing the company's press service.

"According to preliminary estimates, the plant can be rebuilt in 6-7 years, but before that, as I have already mentioned, the territory must be de-occupied, and then we will be able to drain the site where the explosion took place, conduct a survey, dismantle the destroyed buildings and structures of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. And then we will start rebuilding the station," said Sirota.

According to him, Ukrhydroenergo's average annual lost revenue from the sale of electricity and ancillary services as a result of the destruction of the hydroelectric power plant is USD 138 million. In addition to the lost revenue, the destruction of the Kakhovka reservoir resulted in unfavourable operating conditions and periodic power restrictions at Dnipro HPP-1 and HPP-2 units and other HPPs in the Dnipro cascade.

"The destruction of Kakhovka HPP resulted in the loss of 343.2 MW of installed capacity. In addition, 192 MW of regulating capacity was lost, which is necessary for the operational balancing of the IPS of Ukraine," noted Syrota.

The destruction of the reservoir also led to problems with water supply to the southern territorial and industrial complexes of Ukraine, which cover the territories of Dnipropetrovska, Zaporizka, Khersonska oblasts and the southern part of Donetsk oblast.

As reported, on the night of 6 June 2023, the Russian army blew up the dam at Kakhovka HPP. The explosion flooded settlements on both banks of the Dnipro River. According to official figures, 32 people died, but it is not known how many people died on the occupied left bank of the Kherson region.

According to the Ministry of Ecology, the total damage caused by the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station exceeds UAH 146 billion.
