Ukraine’s Minister of Energy German Galushchenko and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi held a meeting to discuss the situation at the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (NPP).

According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the ministry’s press service.

“The meeting focused on the situation at the largest nuclear power plant in Europe – Ukraine’s ZNPP, which is occupied by Russians. German Galushchenko expressed concern over the technical condition of the power units, the lack of qualified personnel at the plant, the militarization of the NPP site, mines along the perimeter of the facility and the instability of external power supply due to constant Russian shelling," the statement said.

The minister thanked the IAEA representatives for the work of permanent missions at ZNPP and other nuclear power plants in Ukraine, noting that this is an important element of ensuring the safety of facilities.

Galushchenko and Grossi also discussed the need for coordinating efforts to prevent a blackout of Ukrainian NPPs, as happened in November 2022. In addition, the minister briefed the IAEA Director General about preparations for the completion of units 3 and 4 construction at the Khmelnytskyi NPP.

As reported, the IAEA team present at the occupied ZNPP still does not have access to some areas of the plant that are important for nuclear safety, as well as to open discussions with all relevant personnel.
