Ship heading to Ukraine sinks near coast of Turkey

A foreign-flagged commercial ship has sunk in Turkey, killing three people and injuring three others, according to preliminary reports.

This is reported by Ukrinform referring to TRT Haber.

"A commercial ship under the flag of Guinea-Bissau, which was sailing from Iskenderun to the port of Izmail (Odesa region - ed.) in Ukraine, began to sink and at 03.47 a.m. sent a general emergency distress signal to all ships in the area," the TV channel reports, referring a coast guard.

After receiving the distress signal, one corvette, seven boats, two helicopters and one plane were sent.

According to the TV channel, three people died and three were injured. The search-and rescue-operation is ongoing, but the storm at sea has a negative impact on the work of rescuers.

It is noted that currently, all those who were on the ship at the time of the disaster have been identified by name, a total of 14 people.

According to the information of the Antalya Governorate, the commercial vessel Joe 2 sank off the coast of the Kumludzha district.

As Ukrinform reported, on January 25, 2023, a cargo ship with 22 crew members on board sank near Jeju Island in South Korea.
