Rudkovsky registers draft resolution to disband Berkut riot police

KYIV, January 27 /Ukrinform/. MP Mykola Rudkovsky has registered draft resolution No. 4018 to disband the elite Berkut riot police force.

The document has been published on the official website of the Verkhovna Rada.

"The draft resolution envisages the recommendation for the Cabinet of Ukraine to disband the Berkut special police force of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, cancel the latest amendments to the legal framework on regulating the use of special means, and ban law enforcers from using firearms and other small arms while maintaining public order during peaceful events, demonstrations, rallies, etc," reads the explanatory note to the document.

The author of the bill believes that the main objective of the document is to prevent abuse of power by law enforcement officers during peaceful gatherings, rallies and demonstrations and prevent the actions of law enforcement officers that may lead to casualties in peacetime.
