Komorowski: we cannot be more pro-Ukrainian than Ukrainians
KYIV, May 18 /Ukrinform/. Acting President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski and the candidate of the opposition party Law and Justice (PiS), Andrzej Duda, have expressed their support for Ukraine in the situation in Donbas.
They said this responding to a question about relations with Ukraine and Russia during the presidential TV debate in Poland on Sunday, an Ukrinform correspondent in Poland reported.
"Ukraine is critical for the security of Poland. We can not be more pro-Ukrainian than Ukrainians themselves, but we can help support the independence of Ukraine, because it is in our national interests," Komorowski said.
He noted that Poland supports Ukraine, in particular in the reform of local government and the country's defense system. He noted that Warsaw, where necessary, would provide military assistance for Ukraine, but it has no plans to send Polish troops to Donbas.
"Poland is a proven partner and ally of Ukraine, but not enough to send Polish troops to the war in Donbas," Komorowski said. He added that today there is no need for military assistance to Ukraine.
Duda, in his turn, said that Poland's interests include support for Ukraine and the termination of Russia's "invasion" of Ukraine.
"When we talk about the relationships with Ukraine, it is in our interest for Ukraine to become the EU member, but the war in Ukraine is not in our interests. In order to resolve this conflict and end the [Russian] invasion of Ukraine, we have to act in the framework of the EU and NATO," Duda said.
