Herashchenko: Law on national security to be approved during current parliament session
“We are convinced that this bill will be approved during this session and the topic of the national security will become the key issue for the Verkhovna Rada’s current session. The bill submitted by the President of Ukraine envisages the standards of security and defense that will bring Ukraine closer to the NATO standards. We are talking not only about the strengthening of civil control over law enforcement structures, but also about the formation of an absolutely different infrastructure and a basis for our law enforcement structures," Herashchenko said at a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Inter-Parliamentary Council in Odesa on March 5, an Ukrinform correspondent report.
As Ukrinform earlier reported, the bill on the national security of Ukraine was submitted to the Verkhovna Rada on February 28.
Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council approved the draft law at a meeting on January 17.
According to Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak, the bill regulates the fundamentals and principles of state policy in the field of national security and defense, taking into account the acquisition of membership in the EU and NATO, the mechanisms for improving democratic civilian control over the security and defense sector, the system of management of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, in particular, the division of tasks, functions, powers, responsibilities and accountability of the management of the Defense Ministry and the Armed Forces.
