Crimean Platform Summit to adopt charter on non-recognition of occupation

At the inaugural summit of the Crimean Platform on August 23, a major political document – the Crimean Charter – will be adopted to stipulate the policy of non-recognition of the temporary occupation of Crimea.

First Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Emine Dzheppar said this during a telethon dedicated to the Day of Resistance to Russia’s Occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

According to the deputy minister, the strategic goal of the Crimean Platform is the de-occupation of Crimea, while the tactics to achieve this goal is to keep this topic on the international and domestic agenda.

Dzheppar reminded that the activities of the Crimean Platform would be launched at the inaugural summit on August 23, to which the President of Ukraine invited leaders of many countries.

"The summit will adopt a significant document of a political nature - the Crimean Charter - which will actually stipulate the policy of non-recognition, the policy of pressure, the policy of condemnation of the crimes of the Russian Federation and will also actually codify such a policy of non-recognition," the official said.

She added that after the inaugural summit Ukraine would continue to work to promote this initiative at various levels, including in international organizations.

As reported, the Crimean Platform is a new consultative and coordination format initiated by Ukraine to improve the efficiency of the international response to the occupation of Crimea, respond to growing security challenges, step up international pressure on Russia, prevent further human rights violations, protect victims of the occupying power and to achieve the de-occupation of Crimea and its return to Ukraine.

The Crimean Platform is expected to operate at the level of heads of state and government, foreign ministers, in the dimension of inter-parliamentary cooperation and expert network.

The Crimean Platform is to be launched officially at an inaugural summit in Kyiv in 2021.

On February 26, Ukraine marks the Day of Resistance to Russia’s Occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.

On February 26, 2014, a mass rally organized by the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people took place in front of the Crimean Parliament building in Simferopol to protest against the intentions to annex Crimea from Ukraine. Since then, February 26 has become a symbol of Ukraine's resistance to occupation, which has been lasting already for seven years.
