Georgian ambassador returns to Ukraine after nearly one-year hiatus
"Georgian Ambassador to Ukraine Teimuraz Sharashenidze returned to Kyiv after a long hiatus. This was the result of agreements reached during a phone call between President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili on April 15, 2021," the report reads.
On Thursday, April 22, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Vasyl Bodnar had a meeting with the Georgian ambassador during which both parties emphasized their desire to intensify the development of Ukrainian-Georgian relations and bilateral and multilateral cooperation with a view to strengthening security in the region.
Bodnar spoke in detail about the escalation of the security situation in eastern Ukraine and the Azov-Black Sea region, which is linked to Russia's provocative and destabilizing actions. He drew attention to Russia's reluctance to comply with the ceasefire regime and pointed to the active massing of Russian troops along the Ukrainian-Russian border and in the temporarily occupied Crimea.
Sharashenidze expressed solidarity with Ukraine and reaffirmed Georgia's continued support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
Both parties also discussed the schedule of contacts at the high and highest levels this year.
On April 9, Zourabichvili stressed the need to bring back to Kyiv the Georgian ambassador to Ukraine, who was recalled for consultations on May 8 last year after former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili was appointed chairman of Ukraine's National Reform Council.
The Tbilisi City Court in January 2018 found Saakashvili guilty of abuse of office and sentenced him to three years in prison. The Supreme Court of Georgia upheld the verdict in May 2019.
