Ukrainian parliament adopts law on imprisonment for lies in asset declarations

The Verkhovna Rada has passed a law tightening liability for declaring unreliable information and failure to file an asset declaration, which provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment.

According to an Ukrinform correspondent, 307 MPs voted for bill No. 4651 "On the introduction of amendments to the Code of Administrative Offenses and the Criminal Code to improve the responsibility for declaring inaccurate information and failure to file a declaration by a person authorized to perform state or local government functions" at second reading on Thursday, June 3.

According to the explanatory note, the purpose of the law is to improve the provisions of legislation establishing liability for declaring inaccurate information and failure to submit a declaration by a person authorized to perform state or local government functions, for their effective practical implementation.

The current wording of the Criminal Code does not provide for such a type of punishment as imprisonment for such an offense.

This law enters into force on the day following the day of its publication.

The Verkhovna Rada passed the bill at first reading on April 15, 2021.
