EU ambassador to Ukraine welcomes adoption of law on resumption of HQCJ work

EU Ambassador to Ukraine Matti Maasikas has welcomed the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of a law on the resumption of the work of the High Qualification Commission of Judges (HQCJ), which provides for the decisive role of international experts in the Commission’s formation.

Maasikas wrote about this on Twitter.

"A determined step towards a fundamental reform of Ukraine´s judicial system taken today by the Verkhovna Rada. Welcome the adoption of the High Qualification Commission of Judges reform, look forward to seeing the final text of DL 3711 in line with Venice Commission recommendations," Maasikas said.

The ambassador noted that the European Union was ready to nominate independent experts to support the selection of the High Qualification Commission of Judges.

"For a comprehensive judicial reform, the High Council of Justice to be reformed as well - relevant draft legislation is well advanced," he said.

On Tuesday, June 29, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a law resuming work of the High Qualification Commission of Judges (HQCJ), which provides for the decisive role of international experts in the Commission’s formation.
