A group of influential MEPs from three political groups – the European People's Party, Renew Europe, and the Socialists and Democrats – made a tough statement on the US-Germany agreement on completion of Nord Stream 2, calling it “non-European” and urging the European institutions not to repeat the mistakes of the past in relations with Russia.

“The US-Germany agreement over Nord Stream 2 is not a European agreement, but an attempt by the two countries to improve their bilateral relations and change the situation from very bad to bad. We call upon the EU institutions to learn from the mistakes of past and present relations with Russia and to maintain a comprehensive policy based on European values rather than business deals,” reads the statement shared by MEP Petras Auštrevičius on Facebook.

MEPs state that Nord Stream 2 is undermining Ukraine's security, especially as Russia continues to provoke and escalate tensions against Ukraine: from a military build-up at Ukraine's borders this spring to the most recent propaganda action of filing a complaint against Ukraine with the European Court of Human Rights.

“In addition, Nord Stream 2 project is against the EU Green Deal and increases the Union’s dependence on energy supplies from Russia,” the document says.

The statement was signed by MEPs Petras Auštrevičius, Witold Waszczykowski, Andrius Kubilius, Sandra Kalniete, Domenec Ruiz Devesa, Martin Hojsik, Ivan Stefanec, Ramona Strugariu, Radan Kanev, Karen Melchior, Liudas Mazylis.

As reported, on July 21, the U.S. and German governments issued a joint declaration outlining their position on the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine requested consultations with Germany and the EU within the framework of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.
