Ukraine hopes no decisions to be made at U.S., NATO talks with Russia behind Kyiv’s back
This was stated by the President's Press Secretary Serhiy Nykyforov in a video commentary available to Ukrinform.
"In this situation, we can only welcome the intentions and efforts of the United States, NATO, and Russia to reduce tensions and resolve all disputes at the negotiating table. As for Ukraine’s part in these negotiations, we have confidence in our partners and in their vows that no decision on Ukraine’s fate will be made behind our backs," the spokesperson said.
Nykyforov assured that the Ukrainian side remained in constant contact at various levels with the Administration of U.S. President Joe Biden.
He has also noted that a NATO-Ukraine Commission met ahead of the NATO-Russia Council, where the Ukrainian delegation had the opportunity to present its arguments and reservations, and “in response to hear about the support of all 30 allies."
A range of diplomatic events is taking place this week to discuss European security issues and reduce tensions over Ukraine, provoked by Russia. In particular, the talks between Russia and the United States took place in Geneva on January 10. On Wednesday, January 12, a meeting in the format of the NATO-Russia Council is being held in Brussels.
A meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission with the participation of Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna was held in Brussels on Monday.
In addition, this week the issues of European security and the situation around Ukraine will be discussed by the EU top diplomats and defense chiefs during an informal meeting in Brest, France.
