Canada preparing sanctions over Russia’s recognition of 'LPR/DPR’
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said in a statement, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“Canada, with its partners and allies, will react firmly to this blatant disregard for international law. We are preparing to impose economic sanctions for these actions, separate from those prepared to respond to any further military invasion of Ukraine by Russia,” Joly said.
She stressed that Canada remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“Canada strongly condemns President Putin’s recognition of the non-government controlled areas of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent territories. This constitutes a clear violation of the Minsk agreements, the UN Charter, and a serious threat to the security and stability of the region,” the minister added.
As Ukrinform reported, Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the independence Russia’s puppet formations “Luhansk People’s Republic” and “Donetsk People’s Republic” and signed relevant decrees.
Moreover, he accused Kyiv of escalating the situation in certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions (CADLR), saying that Russia had done “everything to preserve Ukraine's territorial integrity.” Putin ended his speech with a threat to Ukraine, which is allegedly behaving aggressively.
