European Union, Canada pledge to further strengthen sanctions against Russia
“Together with our G7 partners and many others, Canada and the European Commission, within the framework of its competences, will further strengthen these sanctions and continue to degrade Russia’s economic, industrial, technological and innovative potential by supporting the extension of restrictive measures on trade, in the financial sector and beyond,” reads the joint statement by Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, released following a meeting in Brussels.
As noted, Canada and the European Union will work to further step up enforcement and the fight against sanctions evasion.
In addition, Trudeau and von der Leyen pledged to do everything possible to punish Russia for war crimes committed in Ukraine. “We abhor Russia’s grave violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, and will support all war crimes investigations in this regard,” the statement underscores.
On Wednesday, Justin Trudeau flew to Brussels to attend the NATO summit and discuss further assistance to Ukraine with world leaders.
On February 24, Russia started a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, carrying out massive shelling and bombing of peaceful Ukrainian towns and villages.
The entire people of Ukraine rose to fight the invaders, the Armed Forces and the Territorial Defense Forces has stopped the enemy's offensive, inflicting heavy losses on the aggressor.
