Stefanishyna hopes Ukraine's application to join NATO will be considered fast

Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishyna has said she hopes that Ukraine's application for NATO membership will be considered as quickly as Sweden's and Finland's.

That's according to CNN, Ukrinform reports.

"We will see with the now position of Sweden and Finland who have decided to apply for NATO membership, and the response from the allies that this application will be considered and fulfilled immediately. It only serves one very obvious argument that NATO has learned from the political mistakes which has been done back in 2008 by making promises without delivering on decisions and membership which has basically led to three wars, two of which are now happening in Ukrainian territory," she said.

Stefanishyna expressed hope that "when it comes to the consideration of the Ukrainian application, it will also happen much faster."

Earlier on Sunday, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said that his country would apply for NATO membership.

Sweden's ruling Social Democratic Party later backed the country joining NATO.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that "NATO's door is open" for Sweden and Finland.
