Biden: US wants to see prosperous Ukraine with means to defend itself against aggression

The United States wants to see a democratic, independent, sovereign and prosperous Ukraine with the means to deter and defend itself against further aggression.

US President Joe Biden makes a corresponding statement in his op-ed for The New York Times published on Tuesday, Ukrinform reports.

According to Biden, the United States has sent a significant amount of weaponry and ammunition to Ukraine “so it can fight on the battlefield and be in the strongest possible position at the negotiating table.”

The President notes that the United States will continue cooperating with their allies and partners on Russian sanctions, “the toughest ever imposed on a major economy”, and will continue providing Ukraine with advanced weaponry, including Javelin anti-tank missiles, Stinger antiaircraft missiles, powerful artillery and precision rocket systems, radars, unmanned aerial vehicles, Mi-17 helicopters and ammunition.

Moreover, the US will send billions more in financial assistance, as authorized by Congress. The United States, according to Biden, will work with the allies and partners to address the global food crisis that Russia’s aggression is worsening.

“And we will help our European allies and others reduce their dependence on Russian fossil fuels, and speed our transition to a clean energy future,” he adds.

Biden once again stresses that he will not send American troops to take part in military operations in Ukraine. As noted, the US does not encourage or enable Ukraine to strike beyond its borders. “We do not want to prolong the war just to inflict pain on Russia,” Biden writes.

“Americans will stay the course with the Ukrainian people because we understand that freedom is not free… Vladimir Putin did not expect this degree of unity or the strength of our response. He was mistaken. If he expects that we will waver or fracture in the months to come, he is equally mistaken,” Biden sums up.

On February 24, Russia launched a new phase of the eight-year war against Ukraine – a full-scale offensive. The enemy massively shells and bombs peaceful Ukrainian cities, towns, and villages. The Armed Forces, the Territorial Defense Forces and the entire Ukrainian people effectively resist Russian troops and inflict heavy losses on them.
