Parliament backs Kostin's appointment as Ukraine's prosecutor general

The Verkhovna Rada has voted to appoint Andriy Kostin as Ukraine's new prosecutor general.

Some 299 MPs voted for a respective decision at a parliament meeting on Wednesday, Ukrinform reports, citing Yuliia Paliichuk, spokeswoman for the Servant of the People faction.

"The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine supported the appointment of Andriy Kostin to the position of the new prosecutor general. A respective decision gained support from an almost constitutional majority of votes, with 299 MPs voting 'for'," she wrote in a Telegram post.

Earlier, the parliamentary committee on law enforcement activities supported a draft resolution submitted by President Volodymyr Zelensky "On granting consent to the appointment of Andriy Kostin by the President of Ukraine to the position of Prosecutor General."

Early on July 27, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tabled in the parliament a draft resolution on granting consent to Kostin's appointment as Ukraine's prosecutor general.

Kostin is an MP of the ninth convocation, member of the Servant of the People party. He is the chair of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Legal Policy.
