Both candidates for British Prime Minister’s post vow continued support for Ukraine

Former head of the British Ministry of Finance Rishi Sunak and the current Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, the remaining candidates for the post of prime minister, promised during the latest debates to pursue the policy of unwavering support for Ukraine against the background of the ongoing Russian aggression.

That’s according to The Washington Post, Ukrinform reports.

"Both candidates say they will continue the staunch support for Ukraine that has made (outgoing PM Boris) Johnson more popular in Kyiv than in London," the report reads.

It is noted that Great Britain has already provided Ukraine with GBP 4 billion (US$5 billion) worth of military and humanitarian aid, and is training Ukrainian military personnel on UK soil.

Sunak and Truss promise that Great Britain's support for Ukraine will not slow down if either of them is elected to the top government post.

Both candidates also promised to keep defense spending above 2% of GDP, which is recommended by NATO.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, members of the ruling Conservative Party will vote to elect the successor to the current head of the British government, Boris Johnson, before summer end. The outcome of the vote will be announced on September 5. The finalists in the ongoing race are the former head of the Ministry of Finance Rishi Sunak and the current head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Liz Truss.
