Mario Draghi's name will appear on Alley of the Brave in Kyiv - Zelensky
Zelensky had a phone call with Draghi on Thursday, September 29, Ukrinform reports, citing the press service of the Ukrainian president.
Zelensky noted Draghi's important personal role and expressed gratitude for Italy's active support for the independence and sovereignty of Ukraine and for the formation of a new quality of bilateral relations.
"We laid the foundation for their further effective development for the benefit of the peoples of both states," Zelensky said.
He also thanked Draghi for supporting Ukraine on its path to European integration and granting Ukraine the status of a candidate country for EU membership.
"As a sign of our gratitude, you have been awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 1st class. Your name is now also on the Alley of the Brave in Kyiv, along with the names of political leaders who have supported Ukraine since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion. I hope to have the opportunity to meet with you in the near future in Kyiv and personally present a high state award to you," Zelensky said.
It was also stated at the meeting that Italy would maintain a high level of support for Ukraine even after the formation of a new government following the recent parliamentary elections in the country.
According to the report, the main topic of the negotiations was sham referendums staged by the Russian aggressor in the occupied territories.
Both parties also discussed in detail the appropriate reaction to pseudo-referendums.
"They are worthless and do not change reality. The territorial integrity of Ukraine will be restored. And our reaction to Russia's recognition of their results will be very harsh," Zelensky said.
The the need for a firm reaction of the world's leading states in the event of the Kremlin's recognition of pseudo-referendums was also noted.
Separately, the leaders noted the importance of building a system of effective security guarantees for Ukraine with the involvement of key partners, including Italy.
Zelensky informed Draghi about the situation at the front, emphasizing the vital need for Ukraine to further strengthen the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces for the successful return of Ukrainian territories.
While discussing the defense support of Ukraine, both parties exchanged views on the possibility of Italy continuing such assistance, which is extremely important, in particular, for the protection of citizens and civilian infrastructure.
