Russian invasion of Ukraine shows EU lacking critical defense capabilities - Borrell
That’s according to a statement posted by the EU External Action Service, Ukrinform reports.
Borrell noted that this week, an annual conference of the European Defense Agency took place, where the Russian war on Ukraine was the starting point of the discussion.
“I stressed the importance of our support to Ukraine, politically, economically and militarily, meaning with weapons and training, so they can push out the invader, as they are. And we should be able to do this as long as necessary, until Ukraine prevails,” said Borrell.
“This war has also been a wake-up call for all of us about our military capabilities,” the head of EU diplomacy stressed. “We have given weapons to Ukraine, but in so doing, we realized that our military stockpiles have been depleted. With conventional war returning to the heart of Europe, we also realized that we are lacking critical defense capabilities, to be able to protect ourselves from a higher level of threats on the European continent itself.”
Memo. Full-scale Russian military aggression against Ukraine has been ongoing isince February 24. Ukraine's defense forces are fiercely repelling Russian invaders.
