Zelensky, Steinmeier discuss increasing security assistance to Ukraine
“Ukraine appreciates the important new defense decisions taken by the German leadership at the beginning of this year, as well as the significant support in the humanitarian, financial and defense spheres since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion. During the meeting in the format of a video conference with Federal President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, we discussed the situation on the frontline, the necessity of increasing defense support for Ukraine, the diplomatic process on the implementation of the Ukrainian Peace Formula,” Zelensky posted on Telegram.
He thanked Germany for comprehensive assistance to Ukrainians, in particular, for financial and security assistance and for sheltering Ukrainians in this difficult period.
As the President's Office informs, the talks took place on the day of the 31st anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries.
The leaders strongly condemned Russian missile and drone terror against the civilian population and the destruction of critical infrastructure in Ukraine. In this regard, Zelensky praised Germany's help in strengthening Ukrainian air defense with the IRIS-T system, which has proven itself very well in protecting the sky and saving people, as well as the decision to provide Ukraine with Patriot air defense systems and Marder infantry fighting vehicles.
The President of Ukraine pointed out the utmost importance of help from partners to stabilize the work of the Ukrainian energy system, and also highly appreciated the assistance of Germany in the area of interregional and intercity cooperation.
Zelensky also thanked the German side for the Bundestag's decision to recognize the Holodomor as the genocide against the Ukrainian people.
The leaders expressed hope for the speedy restoration of peace on the Ukrainian land.
"We have to bring this moment closer together. And I think that this year we have every chance to get the long-awaited peace and the victory of common sense over aggression," the President of Ukraine emphasized.
As reported, Germany and Great Britain will continue to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, in particular with weapons, constantly adapting the aid to Kyiv's needs.
