President’s Office reveals details of Zelensky–Xi conversation
Serhiy Nykyforov, Press Secretary of the President of Ukraine, said this during the national news telethon.
"This was the resumption of direct dialogue at the highest level and, as our diplomats say, the exchange of views. The President of the People's Republic of China already personally presented the Chinese peace plan, and the President of Ukraine spoke about our peace formula which consists of 10 steps and which is a priority for us in achieving peace. I’m glad to say that there are certain moments where we already have the points of intersection, this is what concerns, for example, the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, the prohibition to seize civilian nuclear facilities. And these are the points of intersection of the Ukrainian and Chinese positions, from which it is possible to start and further develop the dialogue," said the President's spokesman.
According to him, concrete agreements were not expected from this conversation, the very fact of it is important as it can be the first step and impetus for the restoration and development of Ukraine–China relations.
Nykyforov also noted that Ukraine was informed about China's appointment of a special representative who should arrive in Ukraine.
"Let's see what he will bring. I think he will come to understand our position in more detail. Be that as it may, we are very positive about such a direct dialogue with China," he added.
Nykyforov noted that Ukraine had long been willing to talk with China. However, when asked who initiated the current conversation, he said: "It was a mutual interest."
As reported, on April 26, President Volodymyr Zelensky had the first phone conversation with President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion.
