Sweden to support Ukraine on its path to EU - PM
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of Sweden stated this at a joint press conference with the president of Ukraine and leaders of Northern Europe in Helsinki on May 3, Ukrinform reports.
"We continue to support Ukraine's merit-based accession process and assist in reform efforts that will pave the way for Ukraine to start the EU accession talks," said the head of the Swedish government, calling the decision to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership “historic.”
He added that during Sweden’s presidency of the EU, the country is working to ensure that Russia is held accountable for the crimes committed against Ukraine, in particular for the crime of aggression. At the same time, the prime minister emphasized the rights of Ukrainian children, whom Russia forcibly transferred to its territory.
"This must have consequences. Sweden was the first EU country to propose sanctions on this ground. And we'll continue our efforts to address this deeply disturbing issue. In June we will host a high-level meeting on protection of children," Kristersson said.
According to the government head, the meeting will be focused on providing legal assistance to Ukraine in the matter of child protection against the background of "Russia’s uncivilized war".
Kristersson added that Sweden welcomes the important steps taken by the European Union to provide Ukraine with ammunition. He said supporting Ukraine against the background of Russian aggression is "the most important task of the EU and an existential issue" because Ukraine is fighting for the freedom of all Europeans.
According to the head of the government, Sweden has already mobilized about EUR 2 billion in bilateral aid, providing Ukraine with significant amounts of offensive weapons, including IFVs, tanks, modern air defense systems, and also training the Ukrainian military. The country will continue to provide assistance to Ukraine for as long as it’s needed, he assured.
As reported, President Zelensky arrived in Finland on Wednesday, where he took part in the Ukraine-Nordic summit.
