White House on dam blast: Russia bears responsibility for destruction caused by war
White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre made the corresponding statement on Wednesday during a briefing in Washington, Ukrinform's own correspondent reports.
The U.S. continues to assess the incident and remains in full contact with the Ukrainian side, the spokesperson said, adding that the devastation being observed is heartbreaking.
At the same time, she emphasized that, had Russia not invaded Ukraine, the tragedy would have never happened in the first place so the responsibility lies with the Kremlin.
“This dam was under Russia’s control, and they bear responsibility for the destruction caused by this war,” Jean-Pierre said, adding that the U.S. “will do everything that we can to help the people of Ukraine.”
As Ukrinform reported earlier, referring to the estimates voiced by the U.S. administration, the flood caused by the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP dam creates complex threats, as well as the need for the immediate relocation of about 20,000 people.
