U.S. Treasury calls on allies to be more active in undermining Russia’s effort to pace up defense production

U.S. Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo urged allies to be proactive in thwarting Russia's plans to ramp up defense production, as the Kremlin makes significant efforts to secure microelectronics and microchips for Russian missiles and drones, while Russian intelligence around the world keeps hunting for critical components.

He said this in an interview with the Voice of America, Ukrinform reports.

The official explained that this means using sanctions and export restrictions to go after the companies and individuals who provide the Russian military-industrial complex with goods to produce missiles, tanks, and other capabilities. But at the same time, Ukraine needs from partners the weapons it needs for self-defense, Adejemo stressed.

According to Adeyemo, many of these components can be found in China. He is convinced that the USA and Europe should put Russia's main partner, China, before a choice: to retain economic relations with the Western world, or to keep selling dual purpose goods to Russia.

The U.S. is aware that Russia is capable of producing weapons on the scale they need for the war they have been waging in Ukraine only because they receive components from China, the Deputy Secretary said, adding that Bejing must stop supplying to Moscow the goods that are critical to the Russian war machine, including derone engines and microelectronics used in arms production.

He added that he discussed with European allies and partners how to do this. According to Adeyemo, they are ready to do everything possible to prevent Russia from having access to these goods. The U.S. official expects concerted steps to be taken in the coming weeks and months to provide Ukraine with both the weapons it needs and the money it needs to continue to defend itself. Efforts will also be made to ensure that Russia has less access to the goods it needs for the war in Ukraine. In particular, these issues will be discussed at the meeting of G7 leaders in Italy.

The Deputy Secretary noted that his visit to Ukraine reminded him of the reason why Ukraine remains a free country, which is due to the bravery of the nation, adding that the U.S. will continue to stand by Ukraine until Russian aggression is stopped.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, US Deputy Treasury Secretary, Wally Adeyemo, visited Ukraine on May 29.
