Biden: By supporting Ukraine, allies demonstrate their power to the world
U.S. President Joe Biden said this at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.
"This week, we have shown the world once again the power of our allies - what we can achieve when we stand together," Biden said. "That's what the relationship between France and the exemplifies. And now we see it in Ukraine: our two countries are standing with the Ukrainian people, as they fight up Putin's brutal aggression."
Biden recalled that on June 7 he announced $225 million in new security assistance to Ukraine. This is the sixth package the U.S. has provided since national security legislation was passed earlier this year, he said.
"I wish we could have done it six months earlier, but we got it done with $61 billion in additional aid to Ukraine," he added.
Biden commended France and European allies for their leadership in supporting Ukraine, recalling that the EU has allocated more than $107 billion in assistance to Ukraine since the full-scale war began.
"We know what happens if Putin succeeds in subjugating Ukraine. And we know Putin isn't going to stop at Ukraine – it's not just Ukraine, it's about much more than Ukraine. All of Europe will be threatened. We're not going to let that happen. The United States is standing strong with Ukraine," Biden said.
In France, Biden took part in a ceremony dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. On Friday, June 7, he held a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
