A group of MEPs is planning to send a joint letter to the European Commission calling for restrictive measures against Hungary due to Budapest's decision to simplify the entry procedure for citizens of Russia and Belarus.

MEP Petras Austrevicius of Lithuania told this to Ukrinform.

"I fully support the need to take appropriate measures against Hungary's intention to bring citizens of Russia and Belarus to the EU as guest workers. This fundamentally contradicts the values and policies of the EU adopted at the moment. I consider it an attempt by Hungary to appease the eastern dictators, to obtain unilateral economic benefits, to disrupt the solidarity of the West and to violate the common position of the EU," Austrevicius said.

According to him, in view of this situation, some MEPs are already considering sending a joint letter to the European Commission calling for restrictive measures against Hungary after the relevant decision is finally made.

Earlier media reports said that Hungary had simplified entry conditions for citizens of Russia and Belarus. Budapest included Russians and Belarusians in the "national card" program – the card is issued to those willing to work in Hungary for two years with the possibility of extension.

Lithuania, in turn, filed a complaint with the European Commission against Hungary's decision to simplify the entry procedure for citizens of Russia and Belarus, saying that this step threatens the security of the European Union.
