Metsola: EP to vote on EUR 35B loan for Ukraine next week
This was announced by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, at a press conference in Brussels during the European Council meeting, as reported by Ukrinform.
"Welcoming President Zelensky once again here in Brussels, we unanimously reaffirm our unwavering support for Ukraine. We are approaching 1,000 days into this terrible war, and there will be no such thing you ask us as fatigue. The European Parliament in fact delivers on its steadfast support. Just three days ago, we prepared the ground for plenary to approve a loan worth up to 35 billion euros to Ukraine next week, precisely Tuesday. As immobilized Russian assets are going towards repaying this package, we are sending the clearest of signals: those who tried to destroy Ukraine will pay to rebuild it,” Metsola stated.
She emphasized that Europeans seek peace, but it must be a just peace.
“So, we support President Zelensky's Peace Formula as well as his Victory Plan as the way forward,” added the President of the European Parliament.
As previously reported, today, October 17, the two-day European Council meeting began in Brussels, with one of the main topics being the increased EU assistance for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, participated in the meeting of European heads of state and government.
Today, the Ukrainian leader will also visit NATO headquarters, where he will participate in the Ukraine-NATO Council defense ministerial.
On October 9, the EU Council approved EUR 35 billion in macro-financial assistance for Ukraine, along with a new mechanism to assist Ukraine in repaying up to EUR 45 billion in loans provided by the EU and G7 partners.
