Türkiye’s Sinirlioğlu appointed OSCE Secretary General
That’s according to the organization’s press service, Ukrinform reports.
The OSCE Chair-in-Office, Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg, welcomed the appointments of the following senior officials to the OSCE’s top positions:
Feridun Sinirlioğlu (Türkiye) as OSCE Secretary General.
Maria Telalian (Greece) as Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.
Cristophe Kamp (Netherlands) as OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities.
Jan Braathu (Norway) as OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media.
“These appointments reaffirm the OSCE’s critical role as a platform for dialogue and co-operation. They signal the collective determination of the participating States to strengthen the Organization and equip it to respond effectively to the evolving security landscape,” said Borg.
The package decision was preceded by month of negotiations, diplomacy, and common believe in the preservation of OSCE functionality, the official told a press conference.
According to media reports, the Maltese OSCE Chairmanship had previously selected four nominees from 13 candidates for four top positions in the OSCE, but this proposal failed to reach consensus, as both Türkiye and Greece, which had nominated their candidates in a joint step, insisted on seeing their nominees approved. After additional negotiations held behind closed doors, a modified package of four senior officials appeared, which included the candidates proposed by Türkiye and Greece.
