Assad, family arrive in Moscow - media

That’s according to Radio Liberty, referring to Russian media, Ukrinform reports.

Assad was granted asylum in Moscow "on humanitarian grounds," the report says.

It is noted that the Russian Foreign Ministry said in an official statement on Sunday afternoon that "as a result of negotiations with the opposition, Assad agreed to step down from presidency and leave the country."

Sky News recalls that Assad's whereabouts remained unknown after reports of him fleeing the Syrian capital Damascus before the rebels advanced into the capital Sunday morning.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, the joint forces of the Syrian opposition declared Sunday morning the capture of Damascus and the escape of President Assad from the capital.

Earlier, international media reported that the ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could have died in a plane crash.
