Summit in London to discuss strengthening Ukraine and military support
According to Ukrinform, this was reported on the UK government’s website.
"The Prime Minister will intensify his efforts in pursuit of a just and lasting peace in Ukraine by convening international leaders at a summit in London today," the statement reads.
The summit concludes a week of intense diplomatic activity for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, during which he announced increased UK defense spending and visited Washington "for productive talks with President Trump in support of UK and European security." It is noted that Starmer "spoke again with both President Trump and President Zelensky on Friday evening following the events of yesterday at the Presidents’ meeting in Washington D.C."
On Sunday morning, the UK Prime Minister will meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at his office. Following this, leaders from Ukraine, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Canada, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, and Romania will join the summit in central London. Also attending will be Turkey’s foreign minister, the NATO Secretary-General, and the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council.
"The Prime Minister has been clear that there can be no negotiations about Ukraine without Ukraine, a determination he reiterated when he warmly welcomed President Zelensky to Downing Street on Saturday evening ahead of the summit," the UK government reported.
Key topics of discussion at the summit include: strengthening Ukraine’s position, particularly by ongoing military support and increased economic pressure on Russia; the need for a strong and lasting agreement that ensures a permanent peace in Ukraine and its ability to deter and defend against future Russian attacks; further steps toward developing strong security guarantees.
"Three years on from Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, we are at a turning point. Today I will reaffirm my unwavering support for Ukraine and double down on my commitment to provide capacity, training and aid to Ukraine, putting it in the strongest possible position," Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.
According to him, there is now a unique opportunity “to come together to ensure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine that secures their sovereignty and security.”
“Now is the time for us to unite in order to guarantee the best outcome for Ukraine, protect European security, and secure our collective future,” the UK Prime Minister emphasized.
As Ukrinform previously reported, Ukraine and the United Kingdom signed an emergency loan agreement worth GBP 2.26 billion (approximately $3 billion) to fund the procurement of defense materials.
