Chinese military could not have acted in Ukraine without permission from their authorities - Merezhko
Oleksandr Merezhko, MP and Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation, said this in a commentary to Ukrinform.
“The participation of Chinese citizens in the armed aggression against Ukraine is an alarming sign and presents a dangerous situation,” he said.
The parliamentarian recalled that China and Russia officially have a strategic partnership without restrictions, “and they have always supported each other in the military sphere.” He also pointed out that NATO documents identify China as a key contributor to Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
Merezhko emphasized that, until now, China has limited its support for Russia by refraining from providing direct military aid or supplying lethal weapons. However, he warned that the situation is shifting, presenting a significant threat. “China is a totalitarian state with strict control over all aspects of governance. I find it difficult to believe that these individuals, potentially even Chinese military personnel, could have acted without either direct or indirect permission from the Chinese authorities,” he noted.
He further stressed the importance of Ukraine's international partners, particularly the United States and other democratic nations, recognizing the gravity of the situation. Merezhko pointed out that Ukraine is not only fighting against Russian aggression but also confronting a broader coalition of authoritarian and totalitarian regimes, including North Korea, Iran, Belarus, and China, which actively support the aggressor country.
The politician stressed that democratic nations, particularly the United States, must recognize the threat posed by this 'axis of evil' in the war against Ukraine. He asserted that Ukraine has the right to expect adequate support in this struggle, as it stands at the forefront of the fight against a coalition of authoritarian and totalitarian regimes.
He reiterated China's unrestricted strategic partnership with Russia, highlighting its consistent support for the aggressor state. “If we analyze the sequence of events, we see that China maintains an unrestricted strategic partnership with Russia, provides it with support, and now Chinese citizens are appearing in Ukraine, participating in the war as Russian soldiers. Could this be mere coincidence? I personally do not believe so,” the MP stated.
Merezhko also noted that the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation within the Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union attempted to arrange a meeting with the Chinese delegation. However, the Chinese representatives avoided the meeting, further fueling suspicions about the state's involvement in Russia's military actions.
As reported by Ukrinform, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukrainian forces had captured two Chinese soldiers fighting alongside the Russian army.
