Pancake week begins in Ukraine
Ukrinform
Masliana, the Pancake Week before Great Lent, begins today in Ukraine and will last till March 13.
Masliana was celebrated in Ukraine since the time of paganism, when the ancestors worshiped the sun. By tradition, the feast was celebrated during the spring equinox. But after the introduction of Christianity, all pagan customs were gradually uprooted, although the tradition of celebrating the Pancake week remained.
The main tradition of Masliana is cooking and eating pancakes. However, orthodox believers do not eat meat during the Pancake week, while fish, eggs, dairy products are permitted.
