Ex-political prisoner Sushchenko: Concept of ‘propaganda’ should be spelled out in law

Ukrinform
Ukrinform journalist, ex-Kremlin’s prisoner Roman Sushchenko considers it expedient to legislate the concept of "propaganda" which will allow to regulate the information space in Ukraine.

"It seems to me that it is definitely necessary to adopt a relevant law or some norms and then it will be a little bit easier to resist and make a stand against. I believe this must be done to deprive the opponents of an opportunity to speculate. The definition of ‘propaganda’ should be given. The experts, specialists, lawyers should be involved in this process, and the market and actions of certain channels, mass media, should be regulated based on the defined concepts, as in any democratic society," Sushchenko said at the National Media Talk forum, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

If these concepts are vague, people can interpret them at their pleasure, the journalist added.

"And we know that they are used not just at somebody’s pleasure but to pursue specific goals and interests. And then it is much more difficult to regulate the information space because the clouds are created where the discussions are going on, while the matter is not solved," the Ukrinform journalist said.
