Ukraine, its international partners, and organizations have made tremendous efforts to eliminate the aftermath of the Chornobyl disaster, and now, 34 years later, rare animal species again live and new economic projects are implemented there.

On the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the Chornobyl tragedy, the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN, in cooperation with the State Agency of Ukraine for the Exclusion Zone Management, presents a virtual photo exhibition entitled "Chornobyl: Rebirth."

"I am extremely glad that thanks to productive work both in Ukraine and abroad, including at the UN level, the Chornobyl zone has not become a forgotten place on earth. This is where life revives and modern technologies are introduced. And we want to show this to foreign delegations to the UN," Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Sergiy Kyslytsya said in a commentary to Ukrinform.

The photo exhibition illustrates how life returns to the nuclear accident zone. More than 30 years after the catastrophe, unique population of animals and birds, including species not represented in the rest of Ukraine, rebirth there.

At the same time, the diplomat noted, the Chornobyl zone is one of the most productive pages of Ukraine's cooperation with the United Nations and it should also be mentioned.

"Thanks to the assistance of the UN, its institutions, as well as international partners, and financial institutions, the construction of new confinement over the Chornobyl nuclear power plant was completed last year," the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN explained.

The Chornobyl plant has also become a unique site that generates alternative energy. In particular, in 2018 an international project “Solar Chornobyl” has kicked off in the territory of the Chornobyl NPP and now provides 2,000 apartments with electricity produced by solar panels.

All these efforts, Kyslytsya said, are aimed at reducing the negative impact of a man-made catastrophe, helping to revive the wild nature, and preventing such tragedies in the future.

Virtual photo exhibition "Chornobyl: Rebirth" was prepared by the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN in cooperation with the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management. The virtual photo exhibition, which can be seen on the website of the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UN, will be available from April 27 to May 8, 2020.
