Six Ukrainian plays to be translated into English and presented in UK
"The competition commission selected six works by Ukrainian playwrights. The winning texts will be translated into English and subsequently presented in the UK in the format of performative readings and performances," the Ukrainian Institute reports following the results of a drama competition held as part of the Transmission.UA: drama on the move. United Kingdom program.
The competition finalists are:
- Bread Armistice tragedy by Serhiy Zhadan
- Penita La Tragedia opera libretto by Tetiana Kytsenko
- Mother of Gorky family saga by Lena Liahushonkova
- Pilates Time plastic and poetic thriller by Olha Matsiupa
- Tinderland dramedy by Iryna Serebriakova
- Five Songs of Polissia tragedy by Liudmyla Tymoshenko
"There is a first good trend – a playwright finally understands that we need to pay attention to the here and now, to the present, to see the world around us as it is, and to give feedback to what is happening. Perhaps, this happened due to the criteria and requirements set out in this competition. Perhaps, the Ukrainian Institute sets a peculiar mode of conversation," said Pavlo Arye, chief playwright of the Kyiv Academic Drama and Comedy Theater on the Left bank of the Dnieper River, screenwriter, director, member of the drama competition commission.
He added that the level of understanding of topics important to society had grown significantly.
Transmission.UA: drama on the move is a program to support the translation and production of modern Ukrainian drama in Europe. The program will be implemented in Poland, Germany, and the United Kingdom in 2020-2022.
Partner of the program is the British Council Ukraine.
