First cases of Omicron variant detected in Kyiv

The first cases of the Omicron COVID-19 variant have been recorded in Kyiv, according to Mykola Povoroznyk, First Deputy Head of Kyiv City State Administration.

He announced this on his Facebook page, according to the administration's press service.

According to Povoroznyk, "today the city has already recorded cases of the new coronavirus variant Omicron. Experts say that this virus is more contagious than the Delta variant. According to doctors, vaccinated patients have mild symptoms."

"Do not forget about the basic safety rules: wearing face masks, social distancing, and using sanitizers. And if you feel sick, stay home," Povoroznyk said.

He recalled that residents and guests of the Ukrainian capital must comply with anti-epidemic rules and restrictions set for the yellow zone of epidemic danger. The list of restrictions currently in force in the yellow zone was established by Cabinet of Ministers resolution No. 1236 of December 9, 2020 (as amended).

Povoroznyk also recalled that the school holidays have started in Kyiv and will last until January 9.

"So we should make sure that children are in good health when they return to the learning process," he said.

Some 475 new cases of COVID-19 were detected in Kyiv on December 27.
