MFA welcomes evacuation of civilians from Azovstal, calls for further provision of corridors
“MFA welcomes the start of the evacuation of civilians from Azovstal steelworks to the Ukrainian-controlled territory. This became possible thanks to the efforts of Ukrainian leadership Zelensky, UN Secretary General António Guterres, ICRC President Peter Maurer,” the Ministry posted on Twitter.
As noted, the evacuation gives a chance to civilians, in particular mothers and children, to restore normal lives and receive proper treatment.
“Ukraine will do everything possible to help these people to forget the horrors of war,” the Ministry added.
However, it is noted that more is still to be done as hundreds of civilians, including dozens of children, are still waiting to be evacuated. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine calls to further provide humanitarian corridors for these people.
Furthermore, it is stressed that hundreds of wounded Ukrainian soldiers still remain blocked at the plant.
“They need urgent treatment to save their lives. We demand the immediate evacuation of wounded Ukrainian troops in accordance with international humanitarian law,” the Ministry underscored.
As reported, the evacuation of civilians from the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol has begun. The first group of about 100 people is already heading to the government-controlled territory.
