The Fields Medal is an award given to two, three, or four mathematicians at the International Congress of Mathematicians held once every four years under the auspices of the International Mathematical Union. The Fields Medal is regarded as the most prestigious award in the field of mathematics and is often described as the Nobel Prize of Mathematics. It is awarded to young mathematicians under the age of forty to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement for existing work and for the promise of future achievement. The cash prize is CAD 15,000. The award was founded by Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields.
