Some 210 greater flamingos returning to Odesa region
The relevant statement was made by Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park on Facebook, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
In particular, the National Nature Park has been recording the return of greater flamingo flocks in the south of the Odesa region since May 2, 2023.
According to Ivan Rusiev, Doctor of Biological Sciences and Research Scientist at Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park, a total of 210 greater flamingos were spotted there.
“They flew over the border of Tuzly Amazonia. They flew far above Shahany Lagoon but came back and were circling nearby. Then, they left for Zaitsev’s protected lakes. On May 2, 2023, the National Nature Park’s environmental protection specialist, Olena Starovierova, again saw the birds: there were 216 of them. On May 3, 2023, we again observed their incredible flight over the Shahany Lagoon and shoal. A total of 210 birds were counted,” Rusiev noted.
In his words, last year the protected lakes named after Academician Yuvenalii Zaitsev suffered due to the lack of water exchange. Birds are now mostly staying within the conservation area, which is forbidden to visit, especially amid the war.
Additionally, according to Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park, four dolphins have recently been spotted there, catching fish along the shore.
