Nearly 6.2M Ukrainians stay abroad due to war – deputy economy minister
Ukraine's Deputy Economy Minister Tetiana Berezhna said this during the program "Ukrinform: Evening Stream."
"After the full-scale invasion, Ukraine faced an unprecedented situation. Now we really have a large internal migration and a large external migration," Berezhna said.
She added that there are more than five million registered internally displaced persons in Ukraine. However, according to her, not all citizens who have been forced to leave their homes are registered as IDPs.
"If we talk about the departure of Ukrainians outside of Ukraine, the numbers here are very different. We receive data both from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and from Eurostat, which keeps records of Ukrainians temporarily registered in the countries of the European Union. We have information from mobile operators, as well as from analytical institutions," Berezhna said.
She noted that the collected information is processed and checked with the data of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine in order to obtain a specific figure.
"We at the Ministry of Economy come to the conclusion that there are currently about 6.2 million people outside Ukraine who have left since the full-scale invasion," she said.
According to the OPORA civil network, as of June 2023, 8.177 million Ukrainian citizens were abroad due to the Russian invasion, which is about 20% of the pre-war population.
